So, What's The Meaning Of Being Vegan?
Whether you’re green to the plant-based scene, or a seasoned vegan, there’s always something new to learn. From lifestyle tips to tasty recipes you’ll even want to share with your most carnivorous counterpart, we’ve got everything you need!
Vegan 101: What is it?
Going vegan isn’t just about the food on your plate, for many, it’s a lifestyle! Whether you’ve hopped on the bandwagon for health reasons, to lessen your carbon footprint, or for your love of all things living, let’s break down what it means to be vegan:
- Diet: Vegan's don't eat eggs, dairy, honey, gelatin or any other animal products
- Lifestyle: Vegans avoid wearing clothing derived from animals or insects, like leather, silk and wool
- Environment: Vegans take an active stance against animal cruelty and also advocate for a greener planet through zero consumption of animal products, which lowers carbon emissions
Benefits of Eating Vegan
Everybody and every BODY is different! Plant-based eaters may enjoy a host of benefits, but it differs from person to person. Increasing your fruit and veggie intake ensures a host of nutrients. A vegan diet is linked to healthy kidney function, lower blood sugar, and lowered risk of heart disease.
Going Vegan? Here are some Zippy Tips
Take it Easy: It can be hard to make a vegan switch cold turkey (Pun intended). This is a personal journey, so take time as you stock your pantry, learn new recipes, and get acclimated to this new lifestyle. Instead of leaving everything behind all at once, eliminate milk one week, then cheese another (you get the idea). You can also swap in fun substitutes for favorite recipes, like vegan mac and cheese.
Experiment: Try a new vegan restaurant, cook your way through a vegan cookbook, and try new flavors along the way (With Zippy, we’ve made it easy).
Notes to Self: Keep a food journal to help you stay committed! Make note of vegan-friendly restaurants, dishes you enjoyed, and even how you’re feeling. Noting any positive health changes is a great incentive to keep up the good work.
